5 Steps to Take Before Selling Your Junked Car

So if you’re planning on scrapping your car, be sure to tackle these five tasks first.
1. Remove All of Your Personal Belongings
Cars can hold a lot of stuff. From the trunk to the pockets on the back of your seats to the glove box and center console, there are plenty of nooks and crannies where you’ll probably find things.
And you don’t want to sell us your car only to realize a month later that your second favorite golf club was still in the trunk. Or that your daughter’s overdue library book was under the seat.
To ensure these things don’t happen, take the time to clean out your vehicle before selling it. Get everything out of the car. Check under the seats, in the trunk and in that glove box.
Lastly, if your automobile has a CD player, make sure to remove all your discs. Then you won’t lose any of your favorite tunes.
2. Get Your Paperwork in Order
If possible, locate your registration and title for the vehicle. This will make the transferring process easier.
When you sign over the title, you’re transferring the ownership of the vehicle. That means you can’t be held responsible for any future problems with said vehicle.

3. Remove Your License Plates
According to Utah’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), your license plate stays with you whenever you get rid of a car. Even when you sell to a salvage yard, removing the license plate is your responsibility.
To remove the license plate, you’ll need to remove the screws or bolts holding it on. Most cars will require a Phillips or flathead screwdriver. Some plates are held on with hex-head bolts. Those will require a socket set to remove.
Once you’ve removed your license plate, you’ll need to contact your local DMV office. They can help you transfer the plates to another vehicle, or explain how to properly surrender or destroy the plates.
4. Remove Valuable Components for Resale or Reuse
Have you upgraded your stereo system? Is there an aftermarket GPS installed that’s in great shape?
These components can be valuable. If you take the time to remove your upgrades and aftermarket parts, you have some options. You can either install these on your new car, give them to a friend or family member or sell them.
Just make sure you don’t remove any part that you described when negotiating the price for your car. Otherwise, that may affect the value of the car and change the amount due to you at the time of sale.
5. Cancel Your Insurance Policy
There’s no point in paying premiums for a car you don’t own anymore. Once you know you won’t be driving your car, it’s time to cancel your insurance policy.
If you’ve paid for your policy in advance, be sure to ask for a refund.
